Description

A vintage Japanese kokeshi from the Yajiro family. Yarijo kokeshi are the third oldest style of kokeshi dolls (with Togatta and Naruko preceding them). They originated in the town of Yajiro, 20 mins away from the Kamasaki hot spring which dates from 1428. It is believed the residents of the town began making kokeshi as souvenirs for the onsen tourists and the style was influenced by the Togatta kokeshi. This example is signed and dated by the artist, Jukichi Hayashi (1920-1999) dated "60.5.18" 18th May 1960.
