Description
Antique Japanese carved wooden sculpture of a tiger with inset 'gyokugan' glass eyes.
Assembled using the 'yosegi zukuri' method of construction and painted using gofun (a white pigment made from aged ground oyster shells) and mineral pigments the figure would have have originally been vibrantly coloured but has developed a deep soot blackened patina over the centuries.
Likely originally carved for a temple or wealthy household, the sculpture displays a korean influence in its 'comic' expression and dramatic yet elegant pose, early Edo period 17th century.
Materials: Carved hinoki (cypress), glass.
Dimensions: H 50cm x W 70cm x D 35cm (these measurements are inclusive of the tail).
