Japanese vintage carved red lacquer cigarette box featuring a cherry blossom design and tray, from Kamakura. Early 20th Century. The kamakura style of lacquer originated as an imitation of Chinese carved lacquerware called tiao-ch'i, fashionable in Japan during the Kamakura period (1192–1333).
Kamakura-bori (Kamakura carving) dates from the latter part of that period.
