Regular price $160.00

Description

A vintage Japanese bizenware vase, with markings from molten ash and the wood firing seen to sweep around the base and up the sides. The vase is red brown in colour due to the high iron content in the local clay. The pottery is gradually heated to extremely high temperatures, up to 1200 C over the course of 10-14 days. The pottery is stacked in climbing kilns where the smoke and flames are allowed to move between and through, causing unpredicable and unique outcomes in each piece, even in the same firing. Bizenware is one of the oldest pottery styles of Japan and one of the six ancient kilns. It has experienced a revival in popularity since the 1930's.

It is said that food, beer, and sake tastes better using bizenware and flowers last longer in a bizenware vase. When tested scientifically, this style of pottery was shown to block 90% of far infared rays, preserving food and keeping nearby natural materials fresh.

It has a traditional shape with two handles and is glazed. Signed on the base as pictured by the artist.

Dimensions:

15cm wide

12cm deep

25cm high
