Description

Rare Japanese Mingei Dansu – Cypress Wood Storage Chest, Edo Period circa 1830

This rare Japanese Mingei dansu is an outstanding example of folk craft furniture from the late Edo period, dating to around 1830. Rooted in the Mingei (folk art) movement, this chest embodies the philosophy of beauty in utility, simplicity, and honest craftsmanship.

Constructed from solid cypress wood, the chest showcases a warm, natural grain that has aged gracefully over nearly two centuries. The clean, unembellished form speaks to its functional origins, likely used for storing clothing, tools, or household goods in a rural setting. Despite its modest background, the chest radiates quiet elegance, with subtle joinery and the organic charm of hand-forged iron fittings.

A rare find, this Mingei dansu represents the enduring beauty of everyday objects made with care and integrity. Ideal for interiors that appreciate authenticity, wabi-sabi aesthetics, or the tactile richness of aged wood.
