A Japanese wakasa lacquer document box ryoshibako. Wakasa lacquer is said to have originated in the Fukui prefecture near Wakasa Bay. The craftsperson wished to depict the beauty in the depths of the water, and as such, wakasa lacquer often includes embedded shell and other items. It is comprised of many layers of coloured lacquer sanded back to reveal the rippled pattern. It is prized for its artistry and practicality, withstanding both heat and water. Each piece has an individuality, being created by the same craftperson throughout the process.
