Andrea Innocent is a professional artist/illustrator. Innocent’s personal work tells stories of the bizarre and quirky through detailed digital illustration.The limited edition works we have in stock, from her exhibition at Kazari Collector Gallery 2007/2008,is an exploration of Japanese popular culture from an Australian perspective. Innocent girl traverses imaginative worlds from manga and the idiosyncrasies of otaku, to folklore and reality TV in search of the eccentric stories that populate her work.
A self-confessed nipponophile there is no denying the influence her exposure to Japanese culture has had on her work. Themes range from investigations into the cult of otaku to traditional Japanese folk tales and Japanese textiles and their meanings. Her inspirations come from various sources such as newspapers, Japanese television and advertising, books, music, toys, animals, both imagined and real.Heavy in symbolism the illustrations fuse contemporary art and socio-political comment with traditional works. Aesthetically the works borrow heavily from the traditions of ukiyo-e, Manga and subsequent contemporary styles such as ‘Superflat’, Steampunk and Neo-Nihonga. Combining a strong sense of colour and graphics and blending these with ‘found’ photographic and textural images her works become a collage of icons that tell a story and seek to entice a sense of curiosity from the viewer.“Deeply influenced by my time spent in Japan my work has evolved to express itself through limited edition digital prints, drawings and paintings.
These works are topical, reflecting current news/narratives found within a range of media. Many topics reflect the post-modern world; parodied or retold in modern settings they question the elevation of the famous and infamous. I posses an otaku-like obsession with my work, stories about unique characters and situations inspire me and I have a deep desire to share my ‘collection’ with others. Prints and drawings often borrow from the aesthetics of ukiyo-e, and like the ukiyo-e of the 1800’s is an egalitarian art form accessible to a broader public. The images float in an online world as well as amongst ‘high art’ in galleries, the carefully chosen symbology can be read on many levels. I desire interaction with my audience, constantly seeking conversations with those who wish to impart their experiences, stories and knowledge with me and collaboration with artists from a variety of disciplines, this dialogue will become the series of images that I seek to produce, who’s aim is to stimulate thought, conversation and cross-cultural understanding.“Where the quirky, strange, sad and sometimes confusing tales of Japan are illustrated in symbolic, precise and calculated ways!
