Lacquer
Lacquer, sap from the lacquer tree, has been a hard and durable surface used in China, Japan and all South East Asian countries from Thailand, Myanmar to Vietnam and Indonesia, for thousands of years. Lacquer has a shiny clear surface and is often used to cover boxes including brush and ink writing boxes, Japanese o-bento picnic boxes, kimono boxes and sewing boxes which often make excellent decorative jewellery boxes. Lacquer is often defined by technique as with maki-e or kamakura lacquer, or by where it is made such as Wakasa or Ryukyuan lacquer or by material as in Chinese cinnabar lacquer.
