Late 17th-Century Kano School Peony Landscape – Six-Panel Folding Screen

By Kano Chikanobu (Shushin) (1660–1728)

A magnificent late 17th-century six-panel folding screen, this exceptional work exemplifies the refined artistry of the Kano school, Japan’s most influential painting lineage. Signed by the esteemed painter Kano Chikanobu (Shushin), the composition unfolds across a luminous gold-leaf ground, where delicately rendered peonies bloom amid an expansive landscape, evoking the grandeur and elegance of classical Japanese aesthetics.

Executed in ink and mineral pigments on gold leaf, this screen is a masterful display of the Kano school’s stylistic synthesis, blending bold brushwork with ethereal washes of color. The use of gold leaf not only enhances the depth and luminosity of the scene but also reflects light beautifully, animating the landscape with an almost dreamlike quality.

One of a pair (which may be displayed separately), this screen bears the signature: Hogan Josen Fujiwara Chikanobu Hitsu, identifying the artist as Kano Chikanobu (Shushin), a leading figure of the Edo period. Born in Musashi Province as the eldest son of Kano Tsunenobu, he entered the service of the Tokugawa shogunate in 1678 and played a vital role in decorating Edo Castle alongside his father in 1681. By 1713, he had risen to become the third-generation head of the Kobikichō branch of the Kano school, earning the honorary title of Hōgen. His esteemed works are held in prestigious collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and The Tokyo National Museum.

With its monumental scale (H 150 cm × W 370 cm) and its rich artistic pedigree, this screen is a significant piece of Japanese art history. It would make an outstanding addition to any collection, embodying the grace, tradition, and technical mastery of the Kano school at the height of its influence.
