Rare Japanese Woodblock Print – Lanterns Series by Utamaro Kitagawa

This rare Japanese woodblock print is part of the Chinga Shu collection, showcasing Japanese antique lanterns. Created by Kitagawa Utamaro (Japanese: 喜多川 歌麿; c. 1753 – 31 October 1806), one of the most renowned ukiyo-e printmakers of the Edo period (c. 1753 – 1806), this print stands out as a fascinating piece of art. Utamaro is most famous for his bijin-ōkubi-e (large-headed portraits of beautiful women), but he also ventured into nature studies and still-life works, including this series of lantern prints.

Lanterns are a recurring theme in traditional Japanese art, often tied to festivals, celebrations, and spiritual significance. In this print, Utamaro’s delicate rendering of the lanterns captures both their intricate craftsmanship and the glow of light, imbuing the piece with a sense of serenity and elegance.

Condition:

  • The print shows tears/rips, as indicated, which is typical of antique pieces and adds to the authenticity of the artwork. These imperfections reflect the historical age and value of the print.

Dimensions:

  • Width: 33 cm

This woodblock print is a rare example of Utamaro’s work that showcases his diverse artistic range, adding a rich historical and cultural depth to any ukiyo-e collection.
