Rare Japanese Woodblock Print – Lanterns Series by Utamaro Kitagawa
This rare Japanese woodblock print is part of the Chinga Shu collection, featuring images of Japanese antique lanterns. The print is attributed to the renowned artist Kitagawa Utamaro, one of the most celebrated ukiyo-e printmakers from the Edo period (c. 1753 – 1806). Utamaro is best known for his bijin-ōkubi-e, or large-headed portraits of beautiful women, but he also produced a variety of other subjects, including nature studies and still life, as seen in this work.
In this piece, Utamaro captures the elegance of traditional Japanese lanterns, a motif frequently used in Japanese art, particularly during the summer festivals or illuminated evenings. The lanterns may symbolize light, guidance, and the beauty of fleeting moments. Utamaro's delicate approach to detail and his mastery of color would highlight both the fine craftsmanship of the lanterns and their role in creating a serene, festive atmosphere.
Condition:
- The print shows some tears/rips as seen in the image. Given its age, this is typical of antique works, adding to its authenticity and historical value.

This piece would be a valuable acquisition for collectors of ukiyo-e, especially those with an interest in Utamaro's work beyond his famous portraits of beautiful women.
