Rare Japanese Woodblock Print – Lanterns Series by Utamaro Kitagawa

This rare Japanese woodblock print is part of a series of antique lanterns by the renowned artist Utamaro Kitagawa, one of Japan’s most celebrated ukiyo-e artists. Known for his bijin-ōkubi-e (large-headed portraits of beautiful women) and nature studies, Kitagawa Utamaro was a master of capturing delicate details and emotion in his prints.

In this particular piece, from the Chinga Shu collection of rare images, the focus is on the elegant portrayal of traditional Japanese lanterns. Utamaro’s ability to convey texture, light, and shadow would bring the lanterns to life, capturing both their practical use and the atmosphere they evoke during festivals and celebrations in Japanese culture.

While Utamaro is best known for his bijin (beautiful women) prints, his works also include other subjects, such as nature studies and still-life representations like this one, offering a rich variety of perspectives on the world around him.

Condition:

  • Some tears and rips (common with antique prints, reflecting its age and authenticity).

Dimensions:

  • Width: 33 cm
  • Height: 45 cm

This woodblock print would be a valuable addition to any collection of Japanese ukiyo-e art or Utamaro prints, especially for collectors of rare works from his more varied series.
