Japanese Choba-Dansu Shop Storage Chest – Edo Period c.1840

A Japanese choba-dansu, or merchant’s shop storage chest, crafted from zelkova and cedar woods, dating to the Edo period (c.1840). This chest was traditionally used for the secure storage of documents, receipts, cash, and other merchant valuables.

Currently under sensitive restoration, this piece combines historical authenticity with careful conservation to preserve its timber, joinery, and craftsmanship. Its practical design, robust construction, and elegant proportions make it both a functional storage solution and a collectible example of Edo-period cabinetry.
