Japanese Large Choba-Dansu Shop Storage Chest – Meiji Period, c.1900

A large Japanese choba-dansu, traditionally used as a merchant’s shop storage chest, dating to the Meiji period (c.1900). Crafted from high-quality timber with traditional joinery, this chest was designed for the secure storage of documents, cash, and merchant valuables.

Currently under sensitive restoration, the piece is being carefully conserved to preserve its timber, structure, and historical authenticity, ensuring it remains both functional and collectible. Its substantial proportions make it a striking addition to modern interiors, whether used as a storage solution or a statement piece.
