Japanese Choba-Dansu/Merchant’s Chest – Meiji Period, c.1910
A finely crafted Japanese choba-dansu, traditionally used in a merchant’s shop for storing documents, receipts, and other valuables. Constructed from zelkova and paulownia woods, this chest exhibits a beautiful warm color and natural patina, reflecting both age and expert craftsmanship - currently undergoing sensitive restoration.
Dating to the Meiji period (c.1910), the chest combines practical storage with elegant proportions, making it equally suitable as a collectible piece or a functional storage solution in a contemporary interior.
