Japanese Kaidan-Dansu Staircase Chest – Edo Period, Pre-1850
An exceptional Japanese kaidan-dansu (staircase chest) from pre-1850 Edo-period Japan, designed as both a functional storage unit and space-saving staircase. Traditionally used in merchant homes, these multi-purpose chests provided access to lofts or upper floors while storing documents, valuables, and everyday items.
Crafted with a zelkova wood frame for durability and beauty, the chest features paulownia-lined drawers—lightweight and insect-resistant—and cypress wood steps. Each compartment served a practical function, with some drawers secured for valuables and others for daily use.
The tiered form and natural wood variations create a visually striking, sculptural piece, suitable as a bookshelf, room divider, or decorative focal point in both traditional and contemporary interiors. This kaidan-dansu is a rare example of Edo-period ingenuity, combining utility, craftsmanship, and timeless design.
