A pair of traditional Japanese folding fans (Sensu).  Beautifully hand painted on both sides - gold leaf.

Good vintage condition.

Material : Paper, black lacquered bamboo

Motif : Fujin  (God of wind) and Rajin (God of thunder)

Fujin and Raijin are prominent Japanese deities, the gods of wind (Fujin) and thunder (Raijin), often depicted together in art as powerful storm controllers, symbolizing nature's might, famously featured in Tawaraya Sōtatsu's masterpiece screen painting, and recognized for their fierce appearance and roles in mythology, including protecting Japan from invasions. They are usually shown as demonic figures: Raijin with drums for thunder and Fujin with a wind-filled bag, guarding temples and inspiring art. 

Fujin (Wind God)

  • Appearance: Depicted as a fearsome figure, often green-skinned, wielding a large bag filled with wind.
  • Role: Controls breezes and destructive typhoons, often with pointy ears and a wild expression. 

Raijin (Thunder God)

  • Appearance: Usually red-skinned, demonic, with hair blown back, surrounded by a ring of drums he beats with hammers to create thunder.
  • Role: God of thunder, lightning, and storms, also known as Kaminari-sama. 

Common Depictions & Significance

  • Paired Art: They are almost always shown together in art, like the famous "Folding Screen of Fujin and Raijin," because wind and thunder often occur simultaneously.
  • Temple Guardians: Statues of Fujin and Raijin often guard the gates of Buddhist temples, like Sensoji Temple, protecting sacred spaces.
  • Mythological Importance: Born from the chaos after Izanami's death, they were sent to pursue Izanagi and are considered powerful forces in Japanese creation myths and folklore.
  • Cultural Impact: They represent the awe-inspiring power of nature, appearing in various Japanese arts, crafts, and even modern video games.
