Japanese Accounts Chest with Double Security Doors – Edo Period, c.1800

A rare Japanese accounts chest, dating to the Edo period (c.1800), designed with double front doors for added security. Constructed from lightweight yet durable paulownia wood, the chest is fitted with iron hardware, giving both strength and protection.

Such chests were traditionally used by merchants and shopkeepers for the safekeeping of important documents, ledgers, and valuables. The compact size made them highly portable, while the layered security reflected the importance of their contents.

Today, this chest stands as a fine example of Edo-period merchant culture—ideal as a collector’s piece or as a distinctive decorative storage chest within a modern home.
