Rare 18th Century arhat Ksitigarbha, also known as Jizo, of lacquered and carved wood.
The arhat depicted in monk's robes and backed by a circular halo.
Jizō is an enlightened being who, out of compassion, leads others along the Buddhist path. He is best known for rescuing souls from hell and protecting children.
The eyes, carved from rock crystal and painted from behind with black lacquer and gold leaf would have been fitted into the head of the figure.
