Japanese Shop Storage Chest (Chōba-dansu) – Edo Period, Circa 1850

This rare Japanese chōba-dansu (merchant’s shop chest) dates to the Edo period, circa 1850, and is a fine example of functional craftsmanship designed for the commercial world of 19th-century Japan.

Crafted from a harmonious mix of zelkova wood drawer fronts, cypress, and cedar, this chest showcases the natural textures and tones of high-quality native timbers. The zelkova fronts exhibit a beautiful grain and depth of color, giving the piece both visual richness and a robust surface ideal for daily use.

Behind the outer doors are multiple secure cash drawers, originally used for storing receipts, ledgers, and important merchant documents. This internal compartmentalization speaks to the careful organisation and security needs of a traditional Japanese merchant.

Whether used today as a feature cabinet, a unique sideboard, or simply admired as a historical artifact, this chōba-dansu blends utilitarian design with timeless aesthetic character.
