A Japanese merchant’s shop storage chest (choba-dansu) from Sakai, Osaka, crafted from cypress wood with paulownia drawer linings. Dating to the Meiji period (19th century), this chest was traditionally used to store documents, receipts, cash, and other merchant valuables.
Its compact proportions and fine craftsmanship reflect the practical elegance of Japanese merchant furniture. The warm patina of the cypress, paired with the lighter paulownia interiors and sturdy construction, makes this piece both functional and decorative—perfect as a statement storage piece in modern interiors.
