Rare Lacquered Kuruma Dansu – Wheeled Storage Chest, Edo Period, Early 19th Century
A rare lacquered Kuruma Dansu, or wheeled storage chest, from the Edo period, first half of the 19th century. Crafted almost entirely from zelkova wood, prized for its strength and striking grain, with paulownia wood drawer linings for protection and subtle fragrance, this chest exemplifies functional elegance and refined craftsmanship.
The chest features top and bottom sliding doors, with a shelf in the upper section and drawers in the lower section for organized storage. Iron hardware adds durability and traditional character, while the lacquered finish enhances the rich, warm tones of the wood. The wheeled base (kuruma) makes it mobile and practical, allowing easy repositioning in a home or shop.
This Kuruma Dansu is a rare example of Edo-period furniture, combining utility, mobility, and aesthetic refinement, making it an exceptional piece for collectors or as a statement storage piece in modern interiors.
