Japanese Mizuya Ku-Shaku Kitchen Cabinet – Edo Period, c.1850
A substantial and finely crafted Japanese mizuya ku-shaku—a traditional kitchen cabinet—measuring approximately 9 feet in length. Constructed from cypress, cedar, and zelkova woods, this cabinet originates from Shiga Prefecture and dates to the Edo period (c.1850).
Designed for practical storage and food preparation, the cabinet demonstrates the exquisite craftsmanship of Edo-period joinery, with carefully proportioned drawers, sliding doors, and shelving. The warm patina of the mixed timbers reflects centuries of use, while the elegant design ensures it remains a striking statement piece in modern interiors.
