Rare Pair of Japanese Karashishi Paintings – Edo Period, Early 18th Century

A rare pair of antique Japanese Karashishi paintings, depicting the Chinese lion (Karashishi) and Komainu (Korean dog) amid a landscape of rocks and blooming peony flowers on a gold leaf ground. These guardian figures were traditionally placed at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples to ward off evil spirits, a practice introduced to Japan around the 7th–8th centuries AD.

Executed in ink, pigment, and gold leaf on paper and presented in fine handmade frames, these paintings are exceptional examples of Edo-period artistry, combining symbolic significance with refined aesthetic beauty.
