Description

An antique Japanese brown lacquer document box with a Rinpa style design of tethered boats on a river in gold maki e with profuse inlaid mother of pearl. It is from the school of Ogata Korin, with a signature and artist stamp inside the lid. Ogata Korin (1658-1716) was a famous painter who foundered the Rinpa school, his brother Kenzan is well known for his pottery and they worked together. He is best know for his byobu folding screens although he also painted on lacquerware and ceramics. Examples of his work and style are found in The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
