Description

An antique hand-carved and hand-painted Japanese Noh theatre mask, depicting a young female character (onna men). Noh Masks have been described as being like "a window to the soul", due to the differing facial expressions it can produce. The process of carving a mask can take anywhere from two weeks to two months. Carved from a single piece of hinoki, Japanese cypress wood, the back is lacquered and the front painted with several layers of a whitewash called gofun before being hand painted. The expression is kept neutral, but with a play of light and the actor's movements, the mask can produce a range of emotions from sadness to joy. This is a unique attribute of Noh men or Noh masks.

Dimensions:

14cm wide

8cm deep

21cm high
