Description

Large vintage negoro lacquer tray from Japan from the 1920's, with black lacquer overlaid with an orange toned red. Negoro lacquer is a style of lacquerware that is characterised by the application of layers of red lacquer onto a black lacquer base, the red layers designed to gradually wear away with use, revealing the black lacquer underneath. It originates from the Negoro-ji temple complex, in the Kishu area.

For more information on Japanese Lacquerware see our article The Many Layered Art of Japanese Lacquerware.

There are a couple of minor cosmetic dints on the edge of the tray as pictured, apart from that it is in good vintage condition.

Dimensions:

60cm square

4cm high
