Winner of the Prime Ministers Award, this large Vintage Japanese Traditional Kokeshi from the SAKUNAMI family has good colour and lovely peony design. Fine quality and signed by the artist, SUZUKI SHOJI. The body prodile has an elegant squeezed profile (sashikomi) and the classical SAKUNAMI face has a split nose (ware-bana) SAKUNAMI is commonly believed to be the oldest of all the Kokeshi strains. Originating in the MEIJI period. (1868-1912). This kokeshi has a small dent on the left shoulder and some marks on the left side of the head.
